Sparkler Issue #001 launched, Christy Lijewski at Otakon!

August 7th, 2013

otakon-2013

Thank you for a successful launch, everyone! Issue #001 of our magazine Sparkler Monthly went up a week ago, releasing the long-awaited continuation of Jen Lee Quick’s Off*Beat: Chapter 13. (Which seems to be living up to expectations. :D) We also released the newest chapter of Tokyo Demons (Book 2, Chapter 5) and the first chapters of three new series: the comic Dire Hearts, the light novel Gauntletand the audio drama Awake. As a special bonus for Issue #001, those chapters will remain free to read/listen to forever, so check them out!

For those of you reporting bugs since launch, thank you for your feedback, which is helping us iron out wrinkles very quickly. And thank you for your patience while we fixed the payment problems for those first few memberships! For those of you who downloaded the new chapters–we promise to further optimize our ebooks so they look as good as possible on as many devices as possible. Right now the best bet is the PDFs, which work well on computers and many tablets, especially if you use the official Adobe Reader app. You can thank faithful reader Denise Schroeder for that little tip. 😀

As we’ve mentioned before, we’ll be running a table at Otakon this weekend. Stop by to check out our paperbacks, buy memberships with cash, or pick through the merch we’ll have for every single Sparkler series. We’ll be at Booth R11 in Artist Alley, near some of our beloved Sparkler artists who will be running their own tables! And as a special treat, we’ll be hosting:

Dire Hearts event with creator Christy Lijewski! She’ll be at our table Friday 2-4 pm to sign Dire Hearts posters and answer your burning questions!

She may or may not also be equipped to battle Titans. 😀

See you there!

Announcing sparklermonthly.com and audio drama: Awake

July 2nd, 2013

The website for Sparkler Monthly magazine is up at sparklermonthly.com! This includes the Sparkler Shop, where non-Kickstarter people can finally buy the Off*Beat Vol 1-2 reprints and select Off*Beat merchandise, including keychains and posters. (Please note that digital products are e-mailed instantly, but physical products will begin shipping next week.) The new site also reveals the final title that will be part of our launch line-up in Sparkler Monthly Issue #1: the audio drama Awake!

Hina Hwan

Several hundred years in the future, a war-torn United States sends 40,000 people to start a new colony on an earth-like planet in a different solar system. All passengers are cryogenically frozen for the duration of the 3,000-year voyage, except for a small crew to keep the machinery running. For people who can’t afford the high cost of buying fare on the ship, they can pay their way in work: ten years on the crew equals passage for one person. These individuals are taken out of cryogenic sleep once, left awake to work their years, and then are frozen again. People are woken in staggered shifts–a full crew is six “awake” people at one time.

Six hundred years into the voyage, Hina Hwan is woken to work her half of the 30 years needed to pay the fare of her fiancee and his young daughter. But she swiftly learns that the only thing worse than six people isolated in space…is six people and an unidentified corpse. Written by Tory Woollcott and Barabara, directed by Rebecca Scoble, and illustrated by Angela Sham, this psychological drama features the voice talents of Rielle Braid, Alex O’Shea, Jae Jae Lopez, Jesse Hodson, Adam Ford, and Annemieke Wade. In Sparkler Monthly Issue #1, the crew of the spaceship Persephone will face a terrible mystery in their sleeping world.

The Sparkler Monthly website will undergo a number of changes before Issue #1 at the end of July, but readers can find art and information (and a few previews) of  the six launch titles: Off*Beat, Tokyo Demons, Gauntlet, Dire Hearts, Tokyo Demons Audio, and AwakeCheck out the character pages, creator profiles, and bonus material of each series for extra fun.

For those of you submitting pitches to Sparkler Monthly, prose submissions are now closed, and audio drama script submissions are officially open for the month of July. Thank you for your great prose submissions and we look forward to your audio scripts! Please follow the PDF guidelines if you’d like to submit.

Title announcement: Dire Hearts (Christy Lijewski) and Gauntlet (Ellery Prime and T2A)

Chromatic Press is proud to announce two brand-new serials that will launch with Sparkler Monthly Issue #1 in July 2013.

Dire Hearts by Christy Lijewski

At the prestigious Vector Arms Academy, boys are trained to be Knights of the Kingdom, skilled in physical combat–while next door at the Vector Magic Academy, girls are trained to be Casters, proficient in both spells and social graces. Students are expected to eventually choose a partner with the complementary skill to be their Dias, forming a working relationship that becomes a profound lifelong bond…and often leads to marriage.

For Rose, a Caster who can barely work the most basic spells, it ought to be a blessing to have Eigen as her Dias, since he’s a top student and a rare young Knight who can actually use magic. But instead it feels like a curse. Uncomfortable in her own skin and frustrated by her struggles with what society expects of her, Rose’s prickly relationship with Eigen is complicated by the fact that he seems to know something about her missing memories. What happened in the clock tower three years ago that led to Rose’s injured arm? Who was the figure in the shadows that Rose can just barely recall? And why does Eigen keep looking at her like that?!

A new comic series from Christy Lijewski (dA link), author of RE:Play and Next Exit!

Gauntlet by Ellery Prime and T2A

Happy to embrace her adult independence, Clio moves to the sprawling city of her dreams. The layered beauty of the metropolis lives up to her expectations…until one terrible night, when she discovers the dark world at its core. Clio is launched into a frightening labyrinth where everyone seems to be playing a different game. This hidden inner city blurs the line between reality and illusion, concealing both dangers and rewards–and Clio’s forced journey is complicated by friendship, sexual awakening, and betrayal. Clio’s search for the secret inside the gauntlet’s heart will leave her questioning who she is and what she really wants.

In this pulse-pounding thriller by Ellery Prime (eprime) and illustrated by T2A (also known as teaat2am), Clio must play her hand wisely against the stacked deck of the house.

Read these series and others in Sparkler Monthly, starting July 2013! Website (sparklermonthly.com) launches in June.
