Chromatic Press is pleased to announce the addition of two new titles to its expanding library of original, Female Gaze content in Sparkler Monthly: Skyglass, an illustrated prose series, and Windrose, an ongoing comic series. Skyglass will debut in Sparkler Monthly’s June issue (#011) and Windrose will debut in July (#012).
Written by Strange Horizons alumna Jenn Grunigen and featuring the explosive art of Mookie, Skyglass is a collision of post-apocalyptic science fiction and sexy rock gods. The adult-content prologue, Cinderseed, was released in March as a short story for Sparkler Monthly’s Cherry Bomb line. Skyglass tells the tale of two mismatched roommates, their volatile take on friendship, and the messy path to self-actualization, with some intergalactic stardom along the way:
Four years after his human mother and elven father died by double suicide, Moss lives a shadow of a life. He’s an anorexic, aromantic drummer who wallows in apathy and inadvertently wooed his boss in a bathtub. But when Phoenix – a fire elemental turned human pop star – lands on earth and decides to move into his apartment, his stale life gets torched. Phoenix is on a manhunt to find and kill her father, and she has no problem dragging everyone around her into the fire.
“Skyglass is exactly the kind of book I always wanted to publish with Chromatic Press – something so wild and fantastic that it explodes out of genre boxes, so delightfully bizarre that you have trouble explaining it to people,” says Lianne Sentar, head of prose development and editor of Skyglass. “It’s like throwing Ai Yazawa’s Nana, a space opera, and a really fresh take on post-apocalyptic Earth into a blender. Grunigen’s writing style will suck you into a portal. And Mookie was our one and only choice for illustrator, because her work always looked like glam-rock aliens having a party to me. You couldn’t ask for a better match.”
Chapter 1 of Skyglass will be available and free to read in Issue #011 (June 2014) of Sparkler Monthly.
From Spanish creative team Kôsen, authors of Yaoi Press’s Saihoshi and Stallion, and TOKYOPOP Inc.’s Daemonium, comes the fresh and original fantasy adventure Windrose, full of gorgeous art, exciting battles, and heart-stopping romance:
Daniella, the pampered daughter of a French nobleman and a Spanish noblewoman, receives a mysterious gift from her missing father that sets her off on a quest that will not only alter her life, but possibly the entire world around her! With only a miniature astrolabe and a cryptic message to guide her way, Daniella quickly falls in with a handsome pair of thieves – the dashing Angeline and the darkly attractive Leon. But what are they really after? And who will wind up stealing Daniella’s heart? Daniella’s travels will take her to the court of Versailles, the heart of the Ottoman Empire, and into dangers and wonders beyond her wildest dreams.
“Our tales in Sparkler Monthly have taken us from contemporary Brooklyn to deep space and back again, with stops along the way in Tokyo and fictional Soviet satellite states,” says Lillian Diaz-Przybyl, head of comics development and Windrose’s editor. “I’ve always had a fondness for old-fashioned swashbuckler stories, though, and so when Kosen sent us a romp through the 18th century Mediterranean featuring fierce damsels, lady sword fighters, and brooding rogues, I was totally sold. I’m going to be right there with our readership, eagerly awaiting the next thrilling stop on Daniella’s epic adventure!”
Chapter 1 of Windrose will be available and free to read in Issue #012 (July 2014) of Sparkler Monthly.
